5. Picture Introduction; 1928 (Originally in Hindi.)
An essay on the Kuka Revolt was published in February 1928 in Maharathi. Bhagat Singh wrote two picture-portraits along with the essay. This picture portrait has also been taken from Maharathi.
This time the colourful portrait is of Guru Ram Singh. He has already been introduced in detail in the last issue and also in this one. That is sufficient. However, there are two colourful pictures worth mentioning. One is of the Italian young men – every child aspires to become Mussolini. Even in India, a Scouts’ Group, Mahavir Group, Swayam Sewak Dal became briefly, spaces were created but it was merely a temporary fad, like the boiling over of milk. It would be better for the leaders to make these sensitive young leaders into something rather than spout rhetoric in the Council.
The other picture is of Hunar Nagar (Craft Colony), which was organized in a special way in Bombay. We are struck with shock when we compare this huge Hunar Nagar and the condition of the poor, illiterate crafts persons. Even a fraction of the huge amount of money spent on craft exhibitions is not spent on the actual betterment of the condition of the craftspeople. We demand to know how many craftspersons are given money and basic rights by society and the government to aid them and enable them to progress. In how many mohallas, bazaars, towns and cities are craft workshops being opened? How many craftspersons are encouraged to participate in competitions? And how many young people are given stipends to encourage them to learn different crafts? Instead of opening Hindu Sabhas and Congress Mandals, we should expend all our energies in opening craft schools. It is craftwork that can save us from unemployment, slavery and poverty.
